Per capire quel che sta accadendo, nessun osservatorio è più adatto di questa Europa sempre più disgregata, troppo spesso ridotta a progetto economico-politico in cui la cultura ha un ruolo gregario. Eppure, dall'eudaimonia di Aristotele al flourishing dell'odierna filosofia morale, la cultura è da sempre risorsa e motore dell'economia e della società, ma anche della democrazia, dell'uguaglianza, della giustizia. Partendo proprio dall'orizzonte europeo come intersezione fra opposti campi di forza (l'economia e la cultura, le identità nazionali e i flussi migratori, il passato e il futuro), Salvatore Settis affronta alcune idee vigenti di "cultura" e "culture", tra potenziali conflitti e possibili convergenze. Non soltanto quindi il lascito della civiltà greco-romana e della cultura rinascimentale, non soltanto la grande Mitteleuropa. È necessario un quadro più articolato e una maggiore consapevolezza delle "Europe" che compongono questa Europa. Una memoria culturale plurale è infatti il terreno di crescita di una creatività che non miri all'effimera felicità del successo: un sentimento che incardini l'individuo nella vasta comunità europea. A noi italiani va riconosciuto un merito, e spetta un compito. Riconoscendo ai cittadini il diritto alla cultura, la nostra Costituzione ha saputo guardare lontano: occorre farne tesoro ed espandere questa idea fino a contagiare l'Europa intera.
